Slishman Traction Splint (STS) uses proximal traction that is adjusted from the hip, which allows the patient to assist the rescuer during the adjustment process itself, thus minimizing the accompanying pain. Proximal traction also makes STS suitable for use in confined spaces, such as helicopters, ambulances or areas where the patient has been trapped. The construction of the STS prevents the traction plate from protruding beyond the foot, which facilitates the aforementioned placement  into means of transport.
 STS is visible on an X-ray, but the aluminum material does not impede visualization  bones.
